Photograph of G. Clifford and Sara Zook Cress. G. Clifford and Sara Zook Cress served as missionaries in Southern Rhodesia from 1899-1900. They were ordained as missionaries on April 3, 1898 at Zion Church in Dickinson County, Kansas. They sailed from New York on March 8, 1899 bound for Matopo Mission. In November they opened a new mission station a few miles from Matopo. Both Cresses became seriously ill with fever (probably malaria) after only 9 1/2 months in Africa and Sara died on February 8, 1900. She is buried at Matopo Mission. Elder Cress returned to America in July, 1900. He served at Chicago Mission as pastor from 1901 to 1905. His second wife, Amanda Witter Zook Cress, was his sister-in-law who lost her missionary husband in India. The Cresses joined the Baptist Convention with which he served in various pastorates. |
