Photograph of the gravestone of Jacob Engle (Yokeli Engel), first bishop of the Brethren in Christ Church (River Brethren). He was born in Switzerland on November 5, 1753 and emigrated, with his family, to the United States in 1754. He died on February 10, 1832 and was buried in East Donegal Cemetary, Marietta, Pennsylvania. The German script on the tombstone is translated into English as, "Here rests a venerable man while living, declaring God's Righteousness Departing into his heavenly home." |
