| Description | Henry L. Smith and Katie Burkholder Smith. The Smiths were sent to India in 1913, along with M. Effie Rohrer, as the first missionaries under the Foreign Mission Board of the Brethren in Christ Church. Henry Smith died in India of confluent small pox on April 24,1924. Katie Smith with her children, Leoda and Joseph, continued in the work until 1928. Both children became missionaries to India. Henry Smith was the son of S. R. Smith, first president of Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home which later became Messiah College. Katie Smith was the daughter of C. C. Burkholder, first president of Beulah College which later became Upland College. This photo of the Smiths taken around 1913 is typical of the dress worn by the first Brethren in Christ missionaries. |
